Tribuneland fete a success

If you measure the success of the banquet in the number of people who turned out, then the first All-Tribuneland Banquet held Sunday evening at the Colonial Sports N’ Courts was a tremendous success. Awards were the name of the game and everyone who attended was a winner, in probably the finest gathering of high school athletic stars and their caches, who have ever attended a gathering of his kind in Coshocton or anywhere else in Ohio. Steve Schlegel of Colonial Sports N’ courts helped put the plans together and everything went smoothly.

Darrell Kilpatrick, Athletic Director at Coshocton High School, Served as master of ceremonies for the event. Top honorees were Jay Burson of John Glenn High School and Lisa Cline of West Holmes, who were presented trophies as the high school athletes of the year in Ohio by Sports N’ Courts and the Tribune. Cline was the girl’s player of the year in Tribuneland. Other special guests honored were Dr. James Burson, Muskingum College Basketball Coach, Tribune Sports writer Jim Barstow, and correspondent, W.D. Bill Mullinnex from Dresden; Sandy McCauley, Tribune publisher and General Manager; and Steve Carpenter, Tribune managing editor.

Special awards were presented to football players of the Year, Jerry Lewis of Tri-Valley, Offensive Player of the Year; Co-Defensive Players of the Year, Randy Norman of Ridgewood and Pete McDonough of Coshocton. Jim Kaser, of Tri-Valley was the Tribuneland Football Coach of the Year, after the Scotties compiled an 8-2 record. The Sophomore of the Year award went to Cory Perry of River View. In Volleyball, Jandi Ferrell of River View was the Player of the Year and Coach Cathy Seipel of the Lady Bears was the Coach of the Year. They were Class AA State runners up. Doug Davis of Ridgewood was honored as the golfer of the year. He was medallist in the Class AA field last fall.

Steve Schlegel, owner of Sports N’ Courts, presented awards to Cline and Burson. He also presented a Writer of the Year award to Frank Shepherd. All–Tribuneland Basketball award were presented to the girl’s teams. Julie Hoag was the Class AAA player of the Year, and in addition to Cline, Newcomerstown’s Darla Meek was picked as the Tribuneland’s Class A player of the Year. Coaches of the Year awards went to Coach Mary Ann Grimes of Tri-Valley as State runner up in the Class AAA field; Jack Van Reeth of West Holmes, State Champs and Todd Stoffer of Ridgewood in the Class AA field; and Geoff Stevanus of Garaway in Class A.

All-Tribuneland certificates went to first-team members. They were Cline, Jandi Ferrell of River View; and Toni St. Clair of River View; Shane Ridenbaugh of West Holmes; Diane Croy and Karen Kaiser of Ridgewood; Hoag and Crystal Wortman of Tri-Valley; Jo Cramblett of Coshocton; Meek and Jamie Pappas of Newcomerstown; Tammie Youngen and Lori Sigrist of Garaway. Special awards in the Boy’s field went to Burson; Raleigh Anderson of Coshocton; and Co-Coaches of the year, Richie Longaberger of Tri-Valley and Coach Gary McElfresh of Coshocton. Keith Troyer of Hiland was the Class A Player of the Year and Coach Greg Zimmerman of Indian Valley South was the Class A Coach of the Year.

All-Tribuneland certificates went to Anderson, Mike Fox of River View; Tend Macaulay of West Holmes; Todd Paisley of Ridgewood; and Brad Longaberger of Tri-Valley. Class A: Troyer, Todd Osler of Newcomerstown; Devon Werker and Tim Mullet of Garaway; and Paul Triplett of IV South. Special Awards of Appreciation were presented by the Tribune Sports Staff to Athletic Directors, Chuck Eicholtz of Newcomerstown; Dan Butler of Tri-Valley; Dennis Bahmer of Ridgewood; Joe Prosek of River View; and Darrell Kilpatrick of Coshocton.
